Problem with an anal fissure

Problem with an anal fissure

I am suffering from an anal fissure

This is a small but painful injury to the thin, moist surface lining the anus.

What is the cause

An anal fissure most frequently occurs as the result of passing a hard or large stool, or it may be caused by some other mechanical irritation (e.g. diarrhoea or intercourse). A tear often forms during childbirth . Fissures are divided into two groups: acute and chronic. If an acute fissure is not properly treated, then changes will occur in the form of scarring that can lead to subsequent, long-term complications that may result in a chronic tear.

How the problem is diagnosed

The main and most common symptom is soreness both during, and just after defecation. Furthermore, this disease is commonly accompanied by bleeding and itching of the rectum. Itching often occurs at night. A small lump at the edge of the anus is typical for a chronic fissure. All these symptoms can combine in different ways or they can occur in isolation and at different intensities.

How the problem is treated

The treatment for an anal fissure involves the regulation of stool voiding and the easing of the convulsive contractions of the muscles of the anus. After an examination and diagnosis, there follows the introduction of certain measures pertaining to diet, the adjustment of voiding habits, and medication. In those cases when conservative treatment is not sufficient, surgery may be considered. Treatment for soreness usually involves one-day surgery performed under general anaesthetic.

The risks of surgery

In the vast majority of cases, this procedure can be performed with no further complications. The most common postoperative problem is pain, which can be significantly controlled with the use of medication. In some rare cases, inflammation or delayed healing may occur. Temporary, postoperative swelling is fairly common.

Post-operative care

The management of comfortable defecation and appropriate hygiene are most important in this case.
